Default Frost mage/retribution paladin

Hello all.
After taking years off from GW, which I never got far in anyways, I decided to give it another shot. I'm not much of an MMO person and never really "got" them till I finally gave in and bought WoW. My two most successful characters on it are, as the title implies, a frost mage and retribution paladin. Both specced 100% in that tree.

My question, for you WoW players, is, what class combo and skill build would approximate those to characters? Or at least give me something that would serve the functions as those two?

Thanks.

I suppose the closest to paladin would be maybe a smiting monk or a rit, frost mage is obviously a water ele. The thing to realise is that in GW you don't have the same pigeonholing that you do in WoW, you dont HAVE to stick with one specific skill bar/ att spread, they can be changed at a moments notice for free, so yeah.

On second thought i suppose a retrib pally would be more like a Wammo :P but we all know they sux anyway.

You can have infinite bubble in GW: Shadow form assassins (just farm quickly before it gets nerfed). That's only relevant to pve though. Were you a pvp player? Frost, retri sounds like it.

Retri pally -> Dervish uses 2H scythes and self buffs, can also buff other players to a much lesser degree.
Frost mage -> Water elementalist has CCs. But in general elementalists don't offer anything comparable to the burst potential of shatter combos, etc.

Don't try to remake your old character here.

I'm not trying to be hostile, but you are only setting yourself up for failure, gimped builds, and not having fun.

Guild Wars is not WoW, don't try to force a template into a game, you won't ever get what you are looking for. Learn about Guild Wars and go from there.

Honestly, no. My pally is 60 (I don't have BC yet), and hardly did any PvP. My mage, at 25, has done quite a bit of PvP, but I'm still learning it.

Does an elementalist make up for it with melee weapons? I know melee is not an option for mages, but can ele fair well with it?

As for class, should I do a secondary, or would going "pure" give me something closer to retri pally and frost mage?

Oh, no no, I get that.
I guess what I'm trying for is the functionality of those two characters.
For example, I like the CC and kiting of the frost mage, and wonder what would be similar in GW. I have no illusions about an exact match, just something close.

If you look for that kind of gameplay, you should check out mesmer, and make mesmer/elementalist hybrid.

Elementalist should not used melee weapons, he CAN, but it is not optimal damage. Melee weapons are best used by non-caster classes. Elementalist is mostly support class (water keeps foes snared for physical to tear em up and for other to be able to kite away)

You can also try ranger: it is fair mix of shutdown, snaring/kiting and general damage.

Just remember - in GW you are not bound to one build. If you play for exemaple elementalist it is not uncommon to switch between elements according to quest/mission/area you are going to do. And in Nightfall/Factionds you very soon get ability to change even secondary profession (in Prophecies you have to finish whole story line first). And as you progress in game you are getting new skills which opens new builds and gamestyles... for me is freedom to try different builds with different playstyles big part of why I like GW.

I do not know WoW, but about elementalist and damage - they are the damage dealers in PvE until end of story line nad good damage dealers in PvP. Near end of the main PvE story line and afterwards in hard mode foes has very high armor so elemental damage is just not worth it, eles serve as utility profession (knockdowns, snares, protective wards, blinders, earth tanks + some damage). Eles are very versatile and fun to play, but you want damage dealing caster in PvE hard mode, go for necro/mesmer/monk(smiter).

That's the thing, in GW you can load up a warrior primary with nothing but elementalist spells. So its certainly possible from a customization standpoint, but trying to port over something else and you are really going to end up with a terribly inefficient character that will have trouble getting things done.

And as someone else has said, there are no set builds in GW. Changing a build cost nothing and can be done in any town/outpost. Feel free to try things around, but do not be surprised when you much prefer the general GW staples rather than trying to run something different or similar to another game.

I don't know much about WoW, but it seems like you should just abandon your previous experience and start with a clean slate.

At the fundamental level, there are a small handful of different roles. The two big ones are damage and healing, both of which are self-explanatory. In PvE, this is pretty much all you really need to roll through the game in most areas. The best professions for this are Warriors, Assassins, Dervishes, Necro's, and Ele's in the first half of the game. Mesmers and Monks can deal some damage, but usually aren't as good for damage as the previously mentioned professions.

Then, there is the support/utility role (which are somewhat the same things), and the shutdown role (which is rare in PvE). Ele's, Paragons, Ritualists, and Rangers generally play the former. Through things like snares or blind, interupts, party support healing/damage mitigation, or even a hybrid of damage and healing, they provide things that pure damage or healing can't do. Shutdown is basically just using your skills to prevent another from using their skills effectively. However, since usually it's hard to shutdown more than one or two foes, and mobs coms in anywhere from 3 to like 15, shutdown is pretty useless in general PvE (though some bosses can require shutdown).

So basically, you should try and pick what type of role you would like to play, and decide your profession and skillbar by that choice. For specific build suggestions, try PvXWiki.
